Pennsylvania Gov. Issues Warning Over Raw Milk

WARREN, Pa. — Anyone with a glass bottle of Pot O Gold raw whole milk with a red cap in Pennsylvania is advised to throw it out.

The governor’s office has issued a warning regarding Pot O Gold raw whole milk sold in the area in the past several weeks.v

“Consumers who purchased raw whole milk from Pot O Gold Dairy Specialties in Bear Lake, Warren County, from Sept. 10 to present should immediately discard the milk,” according to a joint release from the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health. “Milk was sold in glass, half-gallon containers with the Pot ‘O Gold label at 16 stores in Crawford, Erie, McKean, Venango, and Warren counties. The milk is linked to confirmed illnesses of salmonella.”

“Nine cases of salmonella have been confirmed at this time,” according to the release. “Salmonella foodborne illness causes diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, and vomiting. Most people recover within four to seven days, but the illness can be more serious in older adults, infants, and those with chronic illnesses. People who consumed the milk should consult their physicians if they become ill.”

In Warren County, the milk was sold at Kondak’s Market in Clarendon, Lottsville Milling; Scandia General Store; Shell Service Center in Warren; Town and Country Store in Sugar Grove; and Youngsville Hardware.

Additional points of sale include Buck and Kathy, Titusville; D&J Bakery, Cambridge Springs; and Miller’s Country Store, Cochranton, in Crawford County; Corry Lumber, Corry; Duran’s Farm Fresh Products, Waterford; Edinboro Market, Edinboro; Orton’s Fruit Market, North East; and Sander’s Market, Corry, in Erie County; Circle K. Feeds, Kane, in McKean County; and Farmer’s Daughter’s Country Market, Seneca, in Venango County.

“Anyone with questions can also contact the Pennsylvania Department of Health at (877) PA-HEALTH.”

The dairy could not be immediately reached for comment Monday afternoon.

According to information posted at the Pot O Gold Facebook page, the warning does not concern all of its products, only raw whole milk with the red cap.

Test results on the milk had not been returned as of Saturday afternoon, according to a post by the dairy. A Friday post indicated that the dairy was voluntarily stopping raw milk sales until the test results were back.
