Cassadaga Valley Takes Part In Writing Study
SINCLAIRVILLE — Jenell Krishnan and Andy Cusimano recently published “Writing Together: Online Synchronous Collaboration in Middle School” in the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy.
The article can be accessed here at tinyurl.com/ybcsz25n. The study found that collaborative writing in the English language arts classroom — where small groups write together using an online platform — positively impacts students’ later independent writing. The Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy highlights innovative, peer-reviewed, research-based practices aimed at improving engagement and achievement among literacy learners ages 12 and older.
Krishnan, pursuing a doctoral degree in the School of Education at the University of California at Irvine, is a former English language arts teacher of Cassadaga Valley Central School. Cusimano has served the student community of Cassadaga Valley as an English language arts teacher for more than 20 years. The research practice partnership also includes their coauthors Dakuo Wang, a research scientist at IBM, and Soobin Yim, a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California. Their partnership focuses on innovative classroom practices for improving literacy outcomes for secondary students.
