Wright’s Following Should Be A Concern
5/9/2008 - We wish that Democratic Party candidate for president Barack Obama had cut all ties to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright previously — but at least he seems to have done so last week.

Job Prospects Hurt By Taxes
5/8/2008 - Late last week, we pointed out that government spending is receiving, in our opinion, too much credit for providing jobs. It came in a report noting that during the first quarter of this year, government spending was one of the ‘‘bright spots’’ in the economy, increasing by an annualized rate of about 2 percent.

Some Problems Aren’t Easy To Solve
5/7/2008 - Many Americans have gotten so hooked on instant gratification — and on believing promises made by politicians — that they simply cannot understand there are some problems that cannot be solved with the stroke of a pen in Washington.

Entitlement At Taxpayers’ Expense
5/6/2008 - Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama seem to be locked in a race to increase the size of the entitlement class in America — regardless of the cost to taxpayers.

Generals Need To Follow Orders, Too
5/5/2008 - Perhaps we missed something involving the chain of command in the U.S. armed services. Like most Americans, we suspect, we had been under the impression that the president is the commander-in-chief of the military and that his designee, the secretary of defense, also outranks all the generals and admirals in the Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard — and Air Force.

Commission Has Taxpayers’ Interests In Mind
5/4/2008 - If we don’t change direction soon, we’ll end up where we’re going.

Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down
5/3/2008 - Oh what a treat is in store tomorrow at the Reg Lenna Civic Center on Third Street in Jamestown for youngsters and the young at heart. So here’s a thumbs up to the showing of the classic film The Wizard of Oz on the big screen at the Reg. With help from the sponsors, Alfie’s Restaurant, Jamestown Pediatrics and Jamestown Area McDonald’s, admission prices are just $3 for children, $5 for adults and $15 for a family of five. The movie starts at 2. Doors will open at 1 p.m. because the Junior Guilders will be providing entertainment in the lobby, and concessions will be available.

While Economy Slows, Spending Increases
5/2/2008 - There is no doubt that the U.S. economy is in a slowdown, but it has not become a recession, according to a report released this week. That is good news, of course — but one of the ‘‘bright spotsî’’ in the report is troubling.

Time To Make A Real Impact Of Fuel Prices
5/1/2008 - Reducing gasoline prices by 18.4 cents per gallon will provide little more than a psychological boost for American motorists over the summer. Fuel prices, averaging in the neighborhood of $3.74 a gallon locally, can fluctuate by 18.4 cents — up or down — within just a week or two.

Spend Rebate Money Locally
4/30/2008 - With the first of the federal tax rebate deposits starting to show up in private bank accounts across Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties, we join Chautauqua County Legislator Scot Stutzman in urging folks to spend the money locally.

Tight Race Keeps McCain Grinning
4/29/2008 - Now that the Pennsylvania primary is last week’s news, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are facing off for the four crucial convention delegates from Guam. Don’t be surprised if they make the trip to campaign on the tiny island. The Democratic presidential nominating contest is that close in the wake of Hillary’s decisive victory in Pennsylvania, which scuffed the shine on Obama’s celebrity candidacy.

Traitors Should Be Punished
4/28/2008 - The United States and Israel are among the closest allies in the world community. It is no exaggeration to suggest that without U.S. help and support, Israel’s ongoing struggle to survive would have been — and would be — much, much more difficult than has been the case.

Timing May Have Been Off For Airline Switch
4/27/2008 - Midwinter, with its risky weather, may not have been the best time to start airline service from Jamestown to Dulles International Airport in Washington.

Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down
4/26/2008 - On this, the eve of National Volunteer Week, we join the salute to all of you who give freely of your time and efforts to the many worthy endeavors that make our community such a great place to live. Keith Ahlstrom, chairman of the Chautauqua County Legislature, stated succinctly the importance of citizen volunteers when he declared April 27-May 3 Volunteer Week in Chautauqua County — particularly in recognition of the many volunteers who work with Chautauqua County youth, he said.
